Should a startup hire an AI intern or an AI engineer?

Choose based on risk, supervision, system responsibility and the cost of failure—not the appeal of a cheaper title.

Choose an intern when

The work is bounded, supervised and safe to learn on.

Examples may include research, internal prototypes, documented experiments and workflow exploration where an experienced person can review decisions and outputs.

Choose an engineer when

The work carries production, security or reliability responsibility.

Customer-facing systems, sensitive data, infrastructure and high-cost failure usually require experienced engineering ownership, even if interns support the work.

Avoid

Do not use an intern title to hide an experienced role.

If the company expects independent architecture, production reliability and little supervision, it should describe and budget for that responsibility honestly.

A mixed model

Pair learning capacity with experienced review.

A senior owner can define standards and review critical work while an intern or junior builder explores bounded parts of the problem.
